@pbsnews: #stitch with @pbsnews May 7, 2025 marked a federal deadline requiring a Real ID in order to board a domestic flight in the United States, access certain federal facilities or enter nuclear power plants. Based on a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005. Its goal was to set a federal standard for state-issued identification cards by 2008. But, privacy concerns, states-rights and funding issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, pushed the deadline multiple times. As fliers scrambled to make sure they were in compliance, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday told House lawmakers that individuals withoutREAL ID compliant identification would still be able to fly after Wednesday’s deadline but might face extra security checks at the airport. Noem said that 81% of travelers already have RealIDs but added, “As folks will come through the line and they will be issued their ID and show it.
