“Just because Tylenol helps with the pain doesn’t mean I have a Tylenol deficiency.” Preach! There are SO many pieces to treating mental health and meds can be great but don’t ignore the rest!

Agree. Bupropion make me want to see friends. Friends show me the world isn't terrible. PTSD now less bad.

what about the heritable mental illnesses like bipolar and schizophrenia? aren't there physiological "deficiencies" that are present regardless of the social component?

The hard question is HOW do we go from the physical to the phenomenal experience of “your mind”.

I thought it was shown that the serotonin hypothesis for depression doesn’t hold up?

that must be why my antidepressants didn't rly help me much even after taking it for years. it helped a bit but nothing huge rly changed. bcs i wasn't even doing anything regarding my behavior. i was just taking it hoping it, alone, will fix me 🙃

If all people had their basic needs met, we'd have much less mental illness. Who WOULDN'T be unwell if they lived on the edge of ruin constantly?

so for adhd the reason for it is not lack of dopamine but lack of brain circuitry to release that dopamine?

Outstanding explanation. Next time a client asks for a magic pill for their anxious untrained emotionally neglected doodle I’m whipping out the expo board.

What about tryptophan malabsorption or one of many reasons the kynurenine pathway might be pinching the tryptophan? Isn't a lack of serotonin the actual issue then? Agreed that the root cause needs to be addressed and not simply medicated, but serotonin deficiency does in fact exist and does create depression without the other factors mentioned here

I want a group home “campus” with different levels for those that could manage alone up to those that need 1:1s. Have trails in park like setting, animals, chores. The worst thing is sitting &staring

I REALLY like this. Kinda helps explain why I chose to ditch meds for now because the anxieties I’m struggling with are from events that I need to again retrain my brain to understand are not the norm

Your opening statement is why I also am flabbergasted by arguments for "free" will. Yes, compatibilism is a thing, and imo the concept itself of free will is incomplete and flawed. But still, physics.

I did Spravato, TMS, and EMDR within the same 6 months of each other - basically what you described here. It CHANGED MY LIFE. I joke that I maybe fixed my brain too much all the time 😂
