@bbc: This could revolutionise the future of driving. 🚙 #TheSecretGeniusOfModernLife #HannahFry #ModernTechnology #STEM #Demo #WomenInEngineering #Motorway #Science #Car #SelfCharging #FutureTech #ElectricCar Hannah Fry has the opportunity to test out self-charging roads, and how they work.
wow! to make it perfect, you could make the wires more accessible for maintenance, link them to the engine directly so you don't waste energy in a polluting and dangerous battery, and bc the road is fixed anyway, link a ton of cars together for capacity and introduce regular stops for ppl to get in and out

Wireless charging has a power loss of 30%. Although for this application it's probably even higher. Far too wasteful to be practical for general consumer use

No country has the power infrastructure to support this en masse. You're pumping electricity into the ground that loses 30% of it's energy when it's being used.

Why don't they also tell you that those coils are powered by a coal burning plant. 😏

Or.. just build trains which can also: carry more people, are more efficient, and takes less overall maintenance for individuals

what it's gonna cost to repair such roads? how complicated will it be? It's bound to be deformed over time,so they should relay the charging infrastructure every 10-15 years FOR EVERY CHARGING ROAD.

Okay but that must be SO inefficient. Just wirelessly charging your phone even though it's basically touching is extremely inefficient compared to wired. Imagine while you're moving and with a big gap

I used to have a dynamo on my bicycle in the 70's. Movement charges. So why do we not see this simple technology now on domestic vehicles

During drive, the tyres can be considered generators, surely that alone can charge it with the relevant devices...Unless thats how they gonna charge road tax per mile..

Great idea, but we cannot fix a pot hole for 6 months in a road, never mind replace the centre of entire motorways with tech.

Meh. Not realistic on a grand scale and too much powerloss. Maybe for taxi's queuing at airports. That seems achievable.
