Honestly, good on the Kyoto price hikes. I love it there, but it's become too much. The locals' exhaustion with tourists is palpable, I would feel bad visiting again. More deterrence has been needed.

I’ve seen so many videos of people moaning about how they can’t travel to Japan anymore because of all the changes but none of this sounds unreasonable tbh. The tax refunds are probably going to be a nightmare though, I hope that process ends up being smoother than I imagine it being.

South Korea has the same tax free system and it was super simple. Save receipts, scan it at the tax free refund kiosks at the airport, go thru security, go to refund counter and get ur cash

The public transport is cheap as hell anyways so 7%-22% is nothing really. Even Shinkansen is a bargain for the speed and distance compared to trains in the UK

The tax free change will just go from stores to airport only, the 90 days is due to the max visa-free tourist stay. Basically too many people were ignoring the whole “tax free only if it leaves japan” and were using stuff which isn’t supposed to be tax free. So now you have to submit and prove, which is fair, instead of just getting everything tax free.

Question about the tax thing. I tried to show the guys at the airport as I was leaving last time since it was the first time I used tax free. They looked at me like I was crazy and just told me to go.
