@sineadbovell: Everyone is cheating their way through college. So we have to expect everything that happens in the home to be powered by supercomputers. Which means we have to test for knowledge in new and more challenging ways. Knowledge doesn’t go away, it gets redefined. And I know it’s a lot to ask of academia (which is why I constantly say we need more money flowing into education), but everyone’s just is changing as a result of this general purpose technology. The world has changed and we owe it to these kids to help them prepare for the futures they are stepping into. This is also precisely the moment we need academics. Higher order thinkers. It’s different for k-12 because teachers don’t write the curriculum. But it does apply to the homework high school students are assigned. It’s an overwhelming moment for everyone. We have to have the humility to recognize general purpose technologies change our world on foundational ways.
ai ruined any sense of urgency in kids. students don’t know the basics and don’t even bother to learn then because AI will do everything for them. truly disheartening

Yes, education needs to accommodate new challenges and technologies. But, students need to prioritize education over grades when in school. That requires an attitude or cultural change.

I'm interested in the concept that the written word is now entirely devalued. What does that mean for knowledge and how we think going forward?

Human direct verbal communication and verbal testing and on site in front of teacher text writing without computers will have to make a comeback. It's Forward to the Past.

is there any role for learning any basic thing? Like when the clerk gave me 100 dollars back in change after I paid for a 26 dollar item with 36 dollars. They literally had no clue the till’s math was off. I had to buy so many tacos for lunch ✨

Agree! I have been teaching families ethical & authentic AI for kids 7-16. I don’t think parents are really grasping what AI is about to do to jobs in the next 3-5 years!

I never believed test of memorized knowledge as a main criteria is the correct way.
How you can improve your thought process, creative thinking skills, reasoning skills are more important.

The thing is, over time, people won’t be needed. AI will eventually take over. People won’t need to go to college. AI will do the jobs we do now. So eduction won’t be needed

Given work and society has not created any ethical realistic plan for jobs under ai, it's unfair to expect kids to not take shortcuts. We're automating human skills away and expecting kids to study?
