Here’s a look at what one aspect of leash training actually looks like in the real world. This is a couple of clips from Wallace’s very first “heel” training session. For the uninitiated, “heel” is a specific leash-walking behavior where your dog walks closely at your side, usually aligned with your leg, and they keep their attention on you and match your pace. Although it looks fancy from a human perspective, it’s really important to remember that heel isn’t intended for extended periods or the entire time you’re walking your dog! Allowing your dog opportunities to sniff, explore, and move more freely is critical for their well-being. “Heel” is a skill you can use strategically during brief periods on walks, like when you’re crossing busy streets, navigating crowded areas, or passing distractions. When you’re getting started with heel training, find a location where you have plenty of space to practice - like this! In these clips, notice how Wallace sometimes moves a bit ahead of me or isn’t perfectly at my side. That’s totally fine at this stage. I don’t correct him for making mistakes. Instead, I show him where I’d prefer him to be and reward him generously when he gets it right. Teaching a dog to walk nicely isn’t about strict rules or corrections. It’s about clear communication, connection, and setting your dog up to succeed. When your dog feels good about training, you’ll both start enjoying your walks more - right away! Keep it simple, keep it fun, and let your dog know when they’re getting it right. How’s leash walking going for you and your dog lately? #dogs #dogtok #DogTraining #dogsoftiktok
