@jcappiello: The NYTimes just reported the DOJ is investigating Washington State for enacting a law requiring clergy to report harm to children in the Act of Confession… and for some reason people are mad about it #confession #catholictiktok #catholic #catholicism #washingtonstate
I would love to hear the new pope’s thoughts on this.

Former catholic and abused child here 🙋🏼♀️they in fact do not care about us. I told my priest and he talked to my mom. She said I was ‘making it up’ and he just believed her and dropped it.

everything I said in confession was told directly to my abuser so we know it's not as confidential as they say

As a cradle catholic i never understood why priests couldn’t testify or speak abt someone if they confessed to a murder if it means it keeps us as a community safe

seperate the church and state, mandating how religions act is a step in the wrong direction

Because that is against the seal of the confessional, and the Priest does not act on his behalf in the confession, but on behalf of Christ.

This will not protect children. Abusers just won’t confess to the abuse

I’m not trying to stick up for them, but, in certain religions (depending on what testament you’re following) when someone confesses you’re not supposed to mention it because it’s supposed to be kept

aren't confessions done a box where the priest can't see their faces? how do they even know who it is unless the confess-ee says their own name?

I swore that clergy members were already mandatory reporters in Washington. I was told by someone who was a reverend that she was a mandatory reporter, and that was 7 years ago

if someone confesses to abuse with their lawyer, are we mandating that their lawyer report them, too?
I'm not arguing against the law, I'm looking for an answer to the confidentiality agreement.
