it's funny how anthropologists spend their lives learning about human societies and they just somehow become anticapitalist anarchists..... really funny how that works 🤭

Actually checks out. When have you ever bartered with a friend or family member. They give you some soup when you’re sick, you return their Tupperware with some homemade pasta. They give you a ride home, you don’t ask for money or something in return, you know they got you because you’d do the same for them. They’re your friend, you’re always in their debt and they’re always in yours.

Just a friendly reminder to yall talking about indigenous gift economies - we are still here, using said economy. Please do not use past tense, we are alive & part of thriving cultures.

Anthropologist here, the barter myth comes from economists, but we in anthropology can’t find evidence of any societies that actually practiced what the economists say they did.

Another myth they like to use a lot is "survival of the fittest". They've warped it to mean "physically strongest" meanwhile millions of species do not rely on brut strength for survival. They leave cooperation, interconnectedness, and emotions at the door.

Indigenous people used the same reciprocity with the land to thank it for providing they would do something kind to help the land flourish

Omg I been saying we should just give each other whatever we need. People confused this w barter but no, we all need the various stuff and have different skills and interests. Let’s just all keep each other alive and well.

Our current Capitalism system of infinite growth will inevitably collapse... because there is no such thing as sustainable infinite growth in reality. Just for example; cancer, parasites and invasive species follow an infinite growth pattern, and usually don't end well. 😬 Ironically, those all make very good analogs for current billionaires around the world who parasiticly hoard resources to the detriment of society as a whole. 😂...😐

Gifting people food and water when they come over for instance. They’re in your home and they just journeyed there. It would be off to make them pay for something you know they need

in norwegian culture we still have this big tradition of "dugnad" which means everybody in a group comes together to make/clean/build/fix something. either belonging to the community, or even just belonging to 1 in the group. no charge, just community and caring❤️
