First TJ Maxx was in MA. They chose K in the UK so it wouldn’t be confused with TJ Hughes which was already operating in the UK.

There’s no legal reason for changing the name to TK Maxx. The parent company, TJX holdings, change the name so that there was a separate unique identity for the company in Europe.
