To people in the comments - as an only child don’t speak on our behalf, I have never longed for a sibling nor do I feel like I’ve missed out or will miss out later in life. Having siblings is no guarantee you’ll get along or they’ll outlive your parents.

I'm an only child. Very little childhood trauma and my childhood's been the best. I'm not "alone in life" as a lot would think. Oh and I have a friend whose sibling beat her up growing up. She has a lot of trauma from it. So no. Siblings don't equate to a more favorable future for the child. Don't listen to others' pressures. They're not the ones paying for your kid's fees. Tell them if they want a sibling for YOUR kid, they pay for their tuition fee 😂

I love being an only child - my thought on it is to make sure you have a village. I have a single mom so her biggest worry was me being alone if she wasn’t around so she gave me a village. I love people & I wouldn’t change being an only child.

It’s selfish to be one and done. It’s selfish to have more than one. It’s selfish to have any kids and it’s selfish to never have kids. That’s the cool part. We get to be selfish about how we choose to live our lives.

Let’s also normalize that being “one and done” isn’t always a choice. Some of us are absolutely gutted that we can’t have more children. Family planning is a luxury not awarded to everyone.

These comments give me the same vibe as the people who say they want kids so they have someone who takes care of them when they’re old. These are not valid reasons to have a child or have more children

I’d say go even further and say normalize doing whatever you want. No kids, 1 kid, 2 kids, 5 kids? Who cares! No is doing the job for you. Everyone has a right to do what works for them!

Just one thing - DONT expect grandchildren. Don’t expect her to give you grandchildren. My mom is too obsessed with the idea of biological grandchildren and she’ll never have them :D If she doesn’t owe me siblings - so I don’t owe her grandchildren.

I know plenty of adults with siblings who can’t stand their sibling. I got along with mine but he’s now disabled so I’ll be his carer when mum can’t. There’s no guarantees how things will go.

My boss is an only child, I once asked if he was ever lonely, and he said “yeah but then I just made friends” and that’s the best response I’ve heard.

Only child here! I had holidays none of my friends ever had, ate the best food, travelled and my mum was even able to help me when I bought my first house. I had a great childhood! Xx
