When I was a kid my mom was a swim coach so we (my brothers and I) spent all day every day at the community pool for a whole summer. Getting back into swimming has brought up a lot of strange nostaligia recently. So I’m gonna share my progress through this project with quips from my childhood. First vivid memory: We were at the gate early in the morning, teenage lifeguards shuffled in after the head coach unlocked the thick padlock with his ring of keys. They all filed onto the bleachers next to the pool, dropping their bags off their shoulders as they grumbled their greetings at the guard shack. The steam coming off the pool covers rose in columns against the brisk morning air. The lifeguards went about their jobs, pushing up the sleeves of their parkas to roll up the pool covers and drag the heavy plactic lane lines across the deck. One guard sat next to me on the bleachers, sipping his coffee as he stared off into space for a moment. He stilled and let out a heavy sigh before he rocked forward onto his feet. He shouldered off his parka and ruffled through his bag to retrieve his sunscreen, applying dollops to his face and arms. He layered the cream onto his nose thickly and nodded in my direction as he placed sunglasses on his bridge. As he turned to walk toward the guard chair, he grabbed a guard tube as he passed the shack. My breakfast that morning was apples and cinnamon oatmeal in a Tupperware. #illustrations #tarot #artistsoftiktok #nostalgia #swimmers #swimteam #lifeguards #lifeguardcheck2025 #parkas #lanelines #poolcovers #swimlessons
