Growing Carrots is super satisfying because of how fun they are to harvest. They are a little work up front but very low maintenance while growing. Carrot tips: Loose soil is important Soil pH should be 6-6.8 Carrots prefer moderate Nitrogen and heavier levels of Potassium and Phosphorus so lower N higher PK Carrots do best here in taller raised garden beds that deter Carrot rust flies and where root knot nematodes are easier to control Don’t forget to water daily for the first couple of weeks Cover with a board fornthe first week to protect vunerable seeds during their germination period from heavy rains and from drying out #carrot #carrots #growfood #gardentok

People either love or loathe cilantro, I happen to love it. Here are a few more tips: If you are purchasing cilantro seed to grow, don’t buy it in packets. Instead buy a big bag of cilantro microgreens. They are the same seeds and you’ll get way more for your money. Learn to save your own seeds and you’ll never have to buy them again. Let me know if you’d like to see how I save and preserve my seeds here. Cilantro thrives in cool temps that are above freezing. If you have tried and failed growing cilantro in the past, you may have been growing it during too warm of temperatures. During warm temperature and/or times of stress, cilantro reacts by releasing bitter compounds and going straight to seed instead of staying nice and leafy and tasty. So keep them regularly watered and grow them during cool weather. Instead of growing individual cilantro plants, try growing it in a patch or large pot and only clipping the tops off when harvesting. This way, your plants can then keep growing and producing for you all season! #growingfood #cilantro #coriander #growingcilantro #growingherbs #homestead #smallfarm #subsistencelife
Tips for growing onions: Variety matters! If you are in the South you need to choose a “Short Day” variety of onion and planting them in the Fall. If you live in the North, plant “Long Day” varieties in the Spring. While the Central U.S. can plant Long or Intermediate Day varieties. In the Tampa area of Florida I plant them from seed Sept 1 thru the end of October. You can use starts instead October thru November here. Plant onions in full sun where they’ll get at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Water 1-2 times daily until they sprout then taper off to about once per week as they grow larger. Onions like a Soil ph of 6-7 to properly absorb nutrients. I top dress monthly with a thin layer of compost, my seed starting fertilizer mix or you can choose a well balanced fertilizer of your choice. They benefit from plenty of nitrogen in the first couple of months in order to establish plenty of greens. Each green leaf is a layer of onion, more leaves means a larger onion with more layers. Contrary to internet trends, it’s not necessary to trim the greens or partially dig the bulbs. Linked in this playlist is how I harvest and store them. #growyourownfood #onions #growingonions #gardenharvest #foodpreservation #storingonions #selfsufficientliving #🧅
