Things a lot of new dad’s experience with their baby in the NICU. Mom’s can experience these too, but usually moms are “trained” to be mother’s at a young age. They’re significantly more likely to help care for siblings and other little ones compared to their brothers/male peers. In some homes, men are even discouraged from assisting with care. For many it is seen as a woman’s role, and for others men are seen as not safe for children. In my particular upbringing, I experienced both with one side just thought of women as the caretakers and the other side thought of men as unsafe with children. These two defaults for many men enables “not shit” fathers to continue being not shit 💩 but it also causes fathers that want to be more involved to be extra fearful, anxious, and on edge around their children. This on edge feeling and anxiiety that makes us feel like we are trying to be careful, ironically can cloud our judgment over the most simple tasks of caretaking for our babies. Plus this narrative makes me. miss out on skills many women have earlier in life; not that caretaking for a child is the duty of another child, but at the same time basic helping of these things can strengthen skills in adulthood. In my therapy practice for ADHD, over the last two years I have worked with many new parents (more than I anticipated), including new fathers that are taking care of a child for the first time while also managing their own ADHD. The transition challenge is far too real with this group and I have been so honored to be able to help them prior to becoming one myself. #nicubaby #preemiestrong #newdad #newparents #parentswithadhd #adhdtherapist
