Rowan had surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. The surgeon is confident that he removed at least 90% of the mass. There was a lot more risks with this surgery compared to the ones he had in the past. High risk for bleeding, possible damage to his kidney or the vena cava. We were so happy that the procedure went smoothly, with no damage to anything. The surgeon was able to completely clean the disease that was near his kidney, and he was confident that removed most of what was near his liver. Now that the majority of the mass is out they will do more in depth testing. With neuroblastoma tumors they can age rapidly and as they do can become benign. It is difficult to tell if the tumor still had active cancer cells on the scans since it would light up as neuroblastoma whether it was dead or not. We have not had the results from those tests yet, we are praying that we will have good news from them. Removing the tumor not only gives them more to test but will improve Rowans quality of life and raise his chances of survival. He is a strong little man! I am in awe at how well he handles everything that is thrown his way! His recovery is going smoothly! He does have some pain, when he tries to sit up or roll over in bed. I try to help him as much as I can so he doesnt hurt. Mostly he is comfortable, resting, or watching spongebob. He stood up today, took a few steps! He also drank some juice and finally had a dirty diaper! He is on his way to feeling all better! I dont know how long we will be here in the hospital. No one has discussed it with me so I expect it to be a little while before we can take him home. They have him on a liquid diet, so I assume once he can eat solids again and walk around better on his own we could possibly go home.
