if this is a British book I'm surprised it's the type of pickle you used, because "cheese & pickle" is a classic combo that refers to a sandwich spread made with pickles like Branston's. in the photo you showed there's brown flecks which is the colour of sandwich pickle! the overall taste is similar but sandwich pickles also contain carrot, cabbage, tomato paste.
