Fun story. I made this 14” weld a few years back. Here are the photos that go with the story. I was pretty proud of this weld, however xray came back as a fail. They said it had underfill (suck back) of the root pass over several inches. I told them there was no way I messed up THAT bad and they should really double check the film or have someone else look at it. Instead, the following morning my Forman confirms it’s a repair. I’m still not convinced. So I start digging, farther over than the repair called. “Repair is a repair” I thought, I wanted to SEE that suck back not just cut it out. By the time I got to the bottom and through the root of this heavy wall pipe and could peek in. Sure enough, the bead inside looked mint, no suck back. I jumped down from my scaffold with my chin held high ready to blame someone else. Before I could speak, my Forman said “hey Austin they actually just got back to me and you don’t need to cut it open. They said their is an Id transition and the QC miss interpretated the film.” Mind you this was hours after he told me to get to cutting with the film in hand. All I could say was “I could’ve told yah that, there’s a nice window in the pipe now” I didn’t get in trouble, but the repair did go in my record which I was sore about. Moral of the story, you know what you put down, if you know it’s in there. And someone says it’s bad, ask for a second opinion. You better just be sure.
