He wanted to make Ellie redeemable. And that’s the issue. Once you are finished with part 2 no one is redeemable. Everyone has a ton of blood on their hands. It’s the point of vengeance and how it won’t change or make you feel better.

there are reveals and huge emotional hits from later in the game that are being butchered. even ellie revealing to jesse she forgave joel and wanted to go on patrol with him was insane and takes away the impact of that final flashback

In the game the closest answer Ellie might have is that these are former Fireflies getting revenge for the massacre (which even Isaac knows Joel by name for this). Knowing the exact parallels ruins Ellie and Abby as foils.

Honestly, I think it's audiences fault. So many people trashed Abby and refused to question why she would 💀 Joel and closed themselves off to her side of the story. So the show is working overtime to make her sympathetic so we are open to hearing her out. Is it the right choice? Idk. But I don't think it's bc Craig doesn't get it.

in the game, it's not what ellie knows it's what the player knows. ellie is as much a proxy for the player. for TV, her not knowing would alleviate ellie of the gravity of her choices. it allows for agency and perspective. the show tells a better story than the games.

Whaaaat? But Ellie does know in the game. There’s a flashback of Ellie leaving Jackson going to the hospital alone. Joel chases her and she forces Joel to tell the truth. That’s why she resents him.

when she said "I Know" it was a partial lie. she said it to intimidate her, make her feel like the only thing she can offer is Abby's location. Read her face, you can tell Ellie did learn about Abby's dad in the scene and chose to downplay it for the power dynamic.
