One year they overbooked & moved our processing day & our poor chickens got so fat they couldnt walk. We had a segregated area so they didn’t get picked on by the walking ones. It was awful

Certain chicken I buy from the store is so chewy I won’t eat it! I can’t imagine an over weight chicken that you know won’t taste good! I wish I still lived near local farms! I’m in SWFL now 😒

Those birds will eat themselves to death. That's not healthy for them and you won't get a quality product at the end.

You probably know this and it’s tangentially related. But when I was working on my masters, I remember learning that as we breed birds that get bigger, they just have BIGGER muscle fibers instead of MORE fibers, which means there’s the same number of capillaries trying to feed more mass 🫠 hence all the necrotic muscle disease in massive meat birds.

my local butcher and the grocery store sells whole chicken that are 9 and 10 pounds, I refuse to buy anything over 6 - 6 1/2 pounds that's about the perfect size to feed my family and it actually tastes good.

Why do they just keep eating? is that a bred trait or natural trait?

I feel like a lot of this is probably personal preference. Bird size mostly depends on breed. There isn't some kind of merit to bigger or smaller birds. It's whatever size suits your needs.

I processed some 10 lb Cornish crosses for someone a couple years ago... I'll keep my 5.5 lb average dressed target

Used to buy chicken locally, usually 7-8 lbs. I bought three broilers from you and my 7yo noticed the difference immediately. He said it tasted like chicken. Glad I bought when I did, and eagerly awaiting the next round.

our neighbor who grinds our feed, raised chickens over 35 years, has a few customers who want a 15-20 lb chicken for Thanksgiving because they don't like turkey. she's got an eye for which birds will tolerate that much gain and her customers say it's delicious 🤷♂️

Could you talk about why people soak the feed before giving to the birds?

as a former chef and newbie in raising chickens. the best weight for a bird is 3 lbs. not more than 4lb. imo

But that is the whole problem. Why should I settle for 9lb when I can get those 3 more pounds and get more money/meat. 🙄

I'd buy all of my chicken from you if you were closer. Gosh I wish you sold to northern IN. I get why you don't, but I wish you did.

I love that you support your practices with scientific data. People don't realize how much research goes into farming!

Imaging making a 12lbs chicken for dinner. You'd have to start at like 2pm. then when my family of two is done, we have to figure out how to use that much before it spoils. Nope. 6-8lbs is big enough. need more? cook 2.

First time I ever had silkie chicken it blew my mind. It was the most flavorful chicken I’ve ever had. Bloated Cornish cross might as well be tofu
