Works better if you run steel through the coil to magnetize it. Wood is not a good conductor so I would also use wire that is insulated with open ends. It's only going to produce mV if not. electrons only move in one direction in a series circuit so your ground is earth then the energy is going away from the ground. Circuit Law

Lightening storms wont do harm to your garden because of this copper antenna. You put it between 6 to 2 feet in the ground. Lightening will travel staight into the ground people.
