The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has officially removed Nigeria from its grey list, citing strong political will and sweeping reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration to combat financial crimes and improve transparency. FATF President, Elisa de Anda Madrazo, announced the decision on Friday at the organisation’s plenary session in Paris, where she also confirmed that Mozambique, Burkina Faso, and South Africa were delisted alongside Nigeria. Madrazo praised Nigeria’s progress over the past two years, describing it as “a reflection of genuine reform and decisive leadership.” “Nigeria has demonstrated strong political commitment to fight financial crimes. This commitment has translated into real change on the ground,” she said. She noted that Nigeria has significantly strengthened its institutions to investigate and prosecute offences such as money laundering, drug trafficking, and terrorist financing. The FATF President also commended reforms in beneficial ownership transparency, real estate supervision, and non-financial sectors, describing them as “clear signs of lasting change.” “We have seen government-wide policy reforms, stronger inter-agency coordination, and cooperation. These are clear indicators of enduring progress,” Madrazo stated. According to her, the FATF plenary unanimously agreed that Nigeria had fulfilled all its obligations, maintaining consistent compliance with its action plan. She further acknowledged the presence of three Nigerian ministers at the plenary — a show of the nation’s seriousness in curbing illicit financial flows. Nigeria’s Interministerial Committee on Anti-Money Laundering/Countering the Financing of Terrorism/Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT/PF) is chaired by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), with the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Ojo, serving as alternate chairs. Speaking on behalf of Nigeria, Finance Minister Wale Edun described the FATF’s decision as “a milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward global financial integrity.” “Nigeria is honoured to contribute to the global fight against financial crimes that threaten shared security and prosperity,” Edun said. “We appreciate the steadfast support of our international partners, including France, Germany, the UK, the U.S., and the European Commission.” He reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to building a safer, more transparent, and globally trusted financial system.
