Submerged German U-boats could radio 10-15m below surface by using long waves.
A huge radio station in Germany called "Riese" (Giant) could sent & receive radio transmissions from more than 10.000km away.
Just the time span of that radio action of an U-boat was limited to prevent from getting encircled > detected.
