Did you know that fancy fonts sound like this with a screen reader? I had no idea until today. I don’t use fancy fonts in any social media text and I’m so glad I haven’t! I’m also making sure I reduce the amount of emoji’s I use, as they have very specific audio descriptions which may be misconstrued. A screen reader is a type of assistive technology (AT) that renders text and image content as speech or braille output. Audio description: the AT digitised sound of a male voice breaks down every letter using fancy fonts. For example, instead of ‘cute’, cute is rendered as ‘the mathematical script small c, mathematical script small u, mathematical script small t, mathematical script small e’. Video description: screen recording of an original tweet from Kent C Dodds which reads ‘You think it’s cute to write your tweets and username this way, but have you listened to what it sounds like with assistive technologies like voiceover?’ Added text by me, ‘what I have learned today.
