The best example imo is that you CANNOT fit another number in between .999... And 1. Therefore they HAVE to be the same number.

we made up math then we taught rocks how to do it and that's where the problems really started

Let x = 0.999... then 10x = 9.999.... then 10x - x = 9.0 so 9x = 9.0 so x = 1 so 0.999... = 1

What do you add to 0.9999… to get to 1? 0.0000… infinite zeros is just zero. There can’t be a …00001 at the end of it because it’s infinite zeros. Anything plus zero is itself, ergo 0.9999… is equal to 1

x = 0.999…; 10x - x = 9.999… - 0.999…; 9x = 9; x = 1

Slightly unintuitive explanation: Decimal representation is not unique. 0.99.. = 1 because one cannot show another real number exists between the two, hence they are the same number.

I say it's an error of types. Integers vs reals. 0.999... = 1.000... 0.999... ≠ 1 They map to the same cardinality, but are not the same number.

No, I refuse this. Infinity is not a value, it's an estimation, a "kinda-value", a concept of a number. 1 has a defined, fixed value. 0.999... does not.

Infinity doesn’t actually exist in reality, so in one sense (theoretically) they are correct. In reality, everything can be counted, so the question is actually useless.

0.99… is just a way to express the limit of the sequence of partial sums of the series 0.9+0.09+0.009… which is 1.

It’s hilarious how non math people are arguing. Yet ANY mathematician knows this is true. But in their defense real analysis is far from being an easy subject.

Another math fact that shouldn’t be true but is: infinity divided by two is still infinity. Infinity divided by one million is still infinity. You can do any operation on infinity and you’ll still get infinity
