Should I have helped more? Here’s why I didn’t until I did… “Scaffolding” is the idea that we guide learning by giving or removing support depending on what the child needs. If my kids are giggling and having fun while being challenged, I see it as an opportunity to help them realize how capable they are and build trust between us. But how do I know when to help—especially out on the ski slope, where finding that balance between helping and challenging them is so important for a continued excitement to ski? 1. Observe… is she motivated? Frustrated? 2. Ask before I rescue. (I had to shorten this moment from about 90 seconds to 50—what you don’t see is when I gave her my hand after she asked for help, before trying more on her own.) 3. Stay engaged and parallel my support to her needs in real time. 4. Praise her effort, not the outcome. I don’t always do this perfectly in the moment when so much is going on, but I try to be conscious of it. For example, saying “I see how focused you are” or “I see how hard you were working,” instead of “Wow! You got up all by yourself!” (I’ve totally said that before too, it’s hard not to.) Some days, I can tell she just needs the love, and I’ll help her in a heartbeat. Other days, she’s up for the challenge. In all of the above, we discover what she’s capable of— with and without my support— that builds her belief in herself. Over time, I’m learning to better tune into each kid’s cues—not only their verbal cues, but their body language, facial expressions, even their breathing. And they’ve come to trust that I’m there, observing, listening, and engaging. My goal isn’t for them to do everything by themselves all the time—it’s for them to love being out here and believe in themselves. @Stio Outdoor Apparel @thermic.official @SkiLookoutPass #raisingcapablekids #scaffolding #consciousparenting #skiingwithkids #outdoorfamily
