The Berlin Victory Parade of September 7, 1945 The Berlin Victory Parade, held on September 7, 1945, was a joint military parade of the main Allied powers—the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France—who had defeated Nazi Germany in World War II. It took place in Berlin, the former capital of the Third Reich, which was at that time divided into four occupation zones. The parade symbolized the unity and military cooperation of the victorious nations and marked their collective triumph over fascism in Europe. Though the main Allied Victory Parade had already taken place in Moscow on June 24, 1945, and the British had organized their own parade in London, the Berlin parade was a more politically symbolic event. It was designed to demonstrate Allied control over Germany and to show the world that the four powers were capable of working together in the post-war world, despite emerging ideological tensions that would later lead to the Cold War. The parade was held in the Charlottenburger Chaussee (now part of Straße des 17. Juni), near the Brandenburg Gate and the Tiergarten, which had suffered heavy destruction during the final battles of the war. The ruins of Berlin provided a stark backdrop, reminding everyone of the cost of the war and the total defeat of Nazi Germany. The Soviet Union had the most prominent role in organizing the event, as their forces had been the first to enter Berlin and bore the brunt of the fighting on the Eastern Front. Marshal Georgy Zhukov, one of the most distinguished Soviet commanders of the war, led the Soviet contingent and represented the USSR during the ceremonies. His presence was significant, as he had already commanded the massive Moscow Victory Parade earlier that year. The United States was represented by General George S. Patton, one of its most well-known and aggressive military leaders. Patton’s participation was notable because he had previously expressed controversial views about the Soviets and the post-war order. Nevertheless, he took part in the parade professionally and led the American forces with discipline and pride. Great Britain was represented by General Brian Robertson, deputy military governor of the British Zone of Occupation. His contingent included troops from various regiments, including armored divisions and artillery units that had fought across Western Europe from D-Day onward. France, although less involved in the final military operations in Germany compared to the other three powers, was still recognized as one of the victorious nations. French troops participated under the command of General Marie-Pierre Kœnig, a respected Free French officer who had fought in North Africa and Europe. The parade featured a massive display of military power. Thousands of soldiers marched in formation, while tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and trucks rolled through the ruined streets. Soviet T-34 tanks, American Shermans, British Churchills, and French military vehicles passed side by side. The parade was also intended to impress both German civilians and any onlookers from around the world. Despite the outward unity, tensions were already rising among the Allies. Disagreements over the future of Germany, Eastern Europe, and the global balance of power were becoming increasingly clear. Just months after the parade, the Cold War would begin to shape the geopolitical landscape for decades to come. Nevertheless, the Berlin Victory Parade of September 7, 1945, remains a rare moment of visible Allied cooperation. It served not only as a military display but also as a political message: that despite ideological differences, the Allied nations had stood together to defeat one of the greatest threats to humanity. Today, the memory of that parade is often overshadowed by the grander and better-documented celebrations in Moscow, London, and New York. #historia #berlin #ww2
