@lbc: Tom Swarbrick has a message for university graduates. #tomswarbrick #university #unitedkingdom #ukpolitics #uknews #employment #genz #youngpeople #unemployment #neet #lbc
My son graduated a year ago and has applied to so many jobs - some not even graduate jobs and he’s had about three interviews and then nothing. In fact he had a second interview with a very well known company who didn’t even bother letting him know he hadn’t got the job nor gave any feedback which is so unhelpful. He also followed it up with HR and got no response from HR either. It’s so awful and soul destroying for these young people - what are they supposed to do?

Gen X - work hard at school do sixth form do well in your ‘A’ levels, well you *might* get to Uni. From a Gen X POV, there’s obv now too many grads coming out of Uni’s. The two generations after saw Uni as a right, something they were entitled to, not a privilege for working hard. There’s the problem.

Employers want experience. If you have a degree, OK, but the employer still wants experience.

I saw this coming and made the tough decision to leave on the second year and found a job that I enjoy. University is a scam you dont need it, experience is king 👑

As a manager, I advertised 1 part time job on just over minimum wage and received a ridiculous amount of applicants. All uni educated. It was heartbreaking for me as my daughter is currently at Uni. I’m worried for her!

Far better if a lot of the students got a trade instead. Far too many going to university

Unfortunately you are of an age where companies took on young inexperienced ppl (as cheap labour) but due to min wage now they want experience. My sons 23, gained electrical Qualifications but cant get anywhere. applied for 100s of jobs, sent out CV to so many company's just asking if they would take him as a trainee, I thought young ppl were shurkers but after seeing for myself with both of my children, getting that 1st job is near impossible now

Too many universities/courses has in the main diluted the value of a degree. AI will remove many jobs, skilled manual jobs will probably out last your working life, but who knows where we’re heading.

Jobs have found new ways to prevent normal people from getting graduate jobs and schemes. They want you to either have loads of experience (which is difficult if you spend your time at uni and holidays working retail or hospitality), or they want a masters degree which is unaffordable for most people.

I left school in 1986. Only 30 people from my year stayed on to 6 form and only half of them went to university out of 180 people in my year.
