see the trick is to have puzzles that aren't just intelligence based. I did a puzzle for my tween players where they had to navigate across a cavern on spider webs without getting stuck or otherwise triggering the notice of the giant spider

To get better engagement from mazes, make them more of a skill challenge or add a chase dynamic. Don't make them actually solve the maze, let them roll dice to solve it

I've never run a maze but my gut says the way to make them fun is to get rid of the map. the characters are in a maze but the players are in a series of encounters with a resource management problem on top.

Splitting the party is genuinely a lot of fun though if you split the party and do mini-sessions before the next full party session. Like the campaign I’m in rn just recently had the party split to gather artifacts or find where one was located, and we just ran two mini-sessions for those groups before all the characters meet back up for the next full session.
