@ramsey.solutions: Loaning money to friends or family doesn’t help — it complicates everything. When you become their lender, it changes the relationship. If you want to help and can afford it, give — don’t loan. And make sure it’s a gift with no strings attached. 💸
If you wanna lose a friend or family help them financially...learned that the hard way.

once you lend a friend or family money, consider it donated.

that's why I never lend to friends. I just give them what help I can afford.
I can't starve my kids to help a friend. I can only get rid of unnessisary expenses like cable TV or subscriptions possibly cancel a vacation to help them. but never have them pay you back. a gift is not something you take back.

I’ve always told my kids, if you loan money to someone make sure you don’t rely on that money, consider it GONE. And be ready to accept that.

100% disagree. I never "loan" money. it's given with zero expectation of repayment

Know who you loan your money to. Some will pay you back, some won't .

Don't loan family money either. You can kiss that money goodbye.

Never loan money to a friend, unless you can afford to lose them both.

Money changes relationships - what was a personal bond becomes a business arrangement with emotional interest. Better to say 'I can't loan money but I can help you brainstorm solutions' - preserves the relationship while setting boundaries.

I don’t believe in this strategy- I have loaned both ways money and were paid back - the bond is stronger. We can have each other’s back and be dignified.

Loaning money to a family member is a trap, and I advice anyone to stay away from it as fast as possible.

I like the way Kevin O’Leary approaches this. You don’t loan them money you give them the money under one condition that they never come back and ask you for money again…..✌🏻

Hmmmm, some years back, my close friend lent me large sums of money on at least three occasions. He never acted differently to me throughout. Neither did I to him. I paid every penny back plus some. We were and remain best of friends to this day. Different goose for different gander.

My husband said it the other way around: When somebody owes you money they own you. They have something of yours that you want back and you think about it all the time and probably more than they do.

So true. If someone owes you money, and then book a holiday, you'd feel a bit different, versus if they didn't owe you money.
