@minutewomenhomecare: Caring for someone with dementia? These 10 simple rules can change everything. Save this for the hard days. Agree, never argue. Redirect, never reason. Distract, never shame. Reassure, never lecture. Reminisce, never say “remember.” Repeat, never say “I told you.” Do what they can do, never say “you can’t.” Ask, never demand. Encourage, never condescend. Reinforce, never force. #homecare #dementia #boston #caregiving

I need to print these and work on them. Mom has early stages of dementia. She eats like a bird and looks like she's walked out of a concentration camp. drinks 2-4 bottles of Starbucks cold coffee, Noni cookies, likes to go out for a donut and coffee or pancakes. For me to cook and prepare meals for 2 people is very difficult. she doesn't like leftovers. I used to argue with her and it would get very ugly. I surrendered. she won. my sanity and her well-being are more important. She will be 91in November. It's very difficult to try to reason with an adult child. I have to pick my battles if any at all. thanks for listening.

I think these rules are great for the family member with dementia. I also think these rules will lead the non dementia care givers to go straight to the insane asylum. How do you answer the same question every 30 seconds without going crazy?

They are good but it’s still hard when they still think you are against them

Most of these are extremely difficult to put into practice. My sister and I care for our mother w dementia, and it's almost a constant battle where we spend our days on pins and needles. Distractions seldom work when she's focused on doing something

Also play their favorite music - also buy life like baby doll for a mother - always visit & talk to them they know you are there but can’t respond back. My mama’s in HEAVEN 🕊️

My mom yelled at me today on the phone because she needs to stay at the facility and she wants to come home. She doesn’t understand, nor remember, why she needs to be there. She fell at home a few times. She is not safe at home. I am filled with anxiety but I know I made the best decision on her behalf.

care staff in dementia homes, don't get the praise or the wages deserve they are with our loved ones when we can't be. They are the family our loved ones see every day.❤️

If they ask if they already asked their question, should you say no?

Yeah, agreed👍. I'm a caregiver for my mum, who was diagnosed with serious dementia. It's not because I'm tired, but sometimes I hope God can take my mum back early to end the suffering she doesn't know.

It’s taken me awhile but once you get use to going with the flow it’s so much easier for the two of you. Remember it’s about them ❤️🙏🏻
