My personal theory is that Gabe is the representative of Grief in their family- not just figuratively, Diana had convinced this spirit to morph and twist into what she believes Gabe is suppose to be- Because she was grieving his whole ‘life’. The reason fan can’t see him or refuses to see him because he refuses to grieve Gabe- but he grieves who be believes Diana was and their now broken relationship, coming to terms with Diana and how she’ll never truely be the same as she was before Gabe- and while he’s grieving, he can see Gabe. But as soon as Natiley enters he puts on a brave face for her and can no longer see Gabe- and Natiley finding out her mom relapsed into her hallucinations and is now grieving over the little normalcy they had- which is why she almost sees Gabe at the end of I am alive. But she’s used to her life being that way- and manages to move past it. Leading to her not having much to grieve and is why she never sees Gabe and he ends up leaving. Because Dan and Natiley are no longer grieving, they’ve come to terms with their respectively messed up lives.

I noticed this during the mic holding in “I’m Alive”. Dan AVOIDS looking at Gabe while Natalie doesn’t acknowledge him at all bc she is the only one who doesn’t see him.

For me the “you’ve always known who I am” is the definite of “you’ve been pretending I’m not here” for me ugh this show is so good

in the very first song, gabe asks diana "why does he *hate* me." if dan had been oblivious to him, he'd be asking why he ignored him or didn't care about him, but even diana's subconscious was aware that dan felt gabe's presence and avoided it

Funner fact: when Natalie drives Diana to the hospital and Gabe is on the table he is UNDER the table facing away making sure he CANNOT see him

What I love is that it’s really up to the actor. I played Dan years ago, and 100000000000% knew Gabe was there. The layers of Dan’s pain and denial are so crazy. What a show.

Without someone he needed to care for taking up all his mental energy, he was forced to confront the grief he’d been stifling all these years. He may not be seeing Gabe literally, but he’s still haunted by him all the same.

ALSO!! When Diana swings the chair at him in “You Don’t Know”, the camera changes to his POV of her, and in the back you can still see Gabe, foreshadowing that Dan could see his son just like his wife.

to me it represents him having to confront his grief. the only person he was looking after left so now he is forced to face the pain that has always been on the surface

Well…it’s metaphorical - it’s more him wondering why his own grief+pain didn’t go away when she did. He convinced himself he wasn’t feeling his Own grief but just empathizing with his wife’s struggles and being supportive. When she left and those feelings only intensified he had to face that he had never processed and only repressed/redirected - literally embrace his own grief

It’s more that he repressed his grief to be strong for Diane and to fit the whole “men don’t cry” act. Once Diane is gone, he’s left to actually deal with it. The grief has been there the whole time, he’s just ignored it.

Dan was the real victim in this story, poor guy.

Imposter_Possum :
He was so consumed with taking care of Diana and her getting better that he projected all of his own grief onto her. He thought he dealt with Gabe and it was in the past for him. In his mind he was okay, it was just Diana who needed help. Then when she leaves and he doesn't need to care for her, he's completely distraught and confused as to why that grief didn't leave with her.

At the start Gabe also asks Diana why Dan doesn’t acknowledge him/talk to him implying Dan actively avoids Gabe

Jack said that the actors could decide themselves whether they saw Gabe or not or in which situation they did, which really adds so many layers to the musical in my opinion.

In original I am the one in the pro shot the camera angle changes as Diana swings the chair at Dan and we see from his pov, and Gabe is right there! It’s literally foreshadowing so obviously but a lot of people don’t realise

ALSO I don’t know if anyone else mentioned this, but when Gabe is exiting the scene, he touches Natalie and I think that’s the spark of the same grief/mental illness that her parents have in her
