The guard is there for the safety of operators, nearby people and property. If you injure someone or damage something, which you will be more likely to do, strimming without it you are 100% liable.

Be careful cause with the guard off if you spoil out your head with too long of line, you put a lot of stress on your engine and you won’t get as high RPMs
