@fryrsquared: The 1892 March edition of the photographic journal "Photography" contains details on how to achieve the best "waist reduction" on a photograph and also gives us this gem: "Ladies I have ever found most grateful for these mercies, even the most modest will at least show their appreciation... Where the dressmaker fails, the retoucher steps in"
The history of retouching is so much older than people realise. They literally used to scrape waists away off the glass plates, and they regularly retouched skin as well, that’s why everyone looks so glowy and have no collarbones!

Many corsets, even if worn comfortably, will also smooth out the waist and slightly re-distribute the squish, adding to the illusion of a tiny waist. Source: my own experience wearing corsets 🤷

In the 1980s, we wore such tight jeans that my sisters and I would lie down on the bed while another used a fork to pull up our zip. Thankfully stretchy denim got invented some time in the 00s.

Fashion uses to be about silhouettes, rather than size. The idea was to create the right shape with your clothing and shapewear, and so anyone could wear the fashionable style regardless of size

Also, big sized dresses are less likely to survive as they would be cut down to make new dresses from the fabric. The small sizes didn't have enough fabric to do that with. Survivorship Bias.

I would assume that women were also more petite in height so generally slimmer than they are today. I’m late 40s, a very average height of 5ft 6, so many young women are taller than me. My mu

😅 a pritt stick! Scary that we've always edited ourselves in "photos" as if people don't see us in real life every day.

Where I’ve learnt about some victorian history (a highschool in Romania) we actually were told Victorian women were quite large, quite over UK18 size. I was surprised in Scotland 🏴 that people didn’t know

Also corsets reshape your waist even without reducing it. My waist is naturally wider face on but narrower from the side, wearing a corset my waist looks tiny face on but wider from the side.
