She’s still threatened and she looks MORE terrified, however, it’s more powerful when she looks at us because it makes us feel like we’re witnessing something and not intervening

Notice her grip on her intimidatingly large and sharp hat pin. My girl is ready to save herself.

additionally, from a woman's perspective, when she faces forward yes she may look lost in thought, but the situation then seems more dire, as if so uncomfortable she can only face forward

It actually makes it worse for me, the first one is asking help, there’s pain and fear, the new one she’s dissociated, there’s nothing there, nothing I can do, she’s gets more broken.

The edit is the woman disassociating because there is no one to ask for help.

I think interpretation of this shift is going to largely break down along gender lines: probably all women have been in a position no matter where our eyes are and we can connect with her regardless. I think a lot of men are going to only really engage if they feel directly being called out as a source of help. (Pro-tip: if you see the second face, she still wants you to do something, she just doesn’t know if you’re a safe person to ask.)

still as terrified, yet with the edit it seems she has more of a 'quiet determination' to save herself. I appreciate how you didn't erase the tears

I Dunno. I definitely thought she looked MORE terrified. Almost panic attack. Whereas looking at the audience she felt less terrified but more asking for assistance. So I’m the first she is putting the onus on the viewer to step in and if they don’t the blame is on them. But the second you want to help not because she’s asking but because she looks like she’s in crisis.

Um not grieving but scared and asking for help.Excellently portrayed. The second still shows fear but trying to ignore him. We look from the outside of this painting.
