I’m an autistic assessor (dx at 13) and these criteria don’t make any sense to me. Decreased habituation isn’t true of most autistics as it aligns with the need for routines. Many of the ADHD specific criteria also fits the bill for autism and I’m not sure why you didn’t include those in the autism criteria? Time blindness, interrupting, hyperfocusing are all major players for most autistics. The section on hyper/hyposensitivity is also inaccurate. There’s no statistics on this claim. Many many autistics can be primarily one or the other, including me (I’m hypersensitive overall) alexithymia is also misinformed. It’s the inability to *express* your feelings not just identify them which can also lead to decreased affective empathy which 100% affects our ability to feel emotions as we struggle to relate our emotions to that of another. Not every alexithymic has decreased affective empathy but it’s super common. The section mentioning verbal shutdowns is also a harmful phrase as nonverbal episodes are caused by pretty severe verbal dyspraxic episodes (speaking as someone who has them) and calling them verbal shutdowns implies it is environmental shutdowns and meltdowns are innately caused by environmental factors. The auDHD section is also kind of insensisitive as autistics have been forced to associate with other diagnoses for years and many consider ADHD as “diet” autism which most of the community feels is extremely harmful rhetoric as well as ableist and bunching us in with ADHD doesn’t really send a good message as they are still two different diagnoses and this section existing implies it’s a third diagnosis. Overlapping symptoms should simply be put into both the autism and adhd sections rather than lumping autism in with adhd. Just because there’s common overlap doesn’t mean it’s implicit. This isn’t meant to be rude but it’s overall a really harmful document with a lot of misinformation and it’s important we as a community have these discussions 💕 all love

yeah and it's so bizarre that dsm criteria have practically no references to internal experience, while it's very much the core of diagnosing stuff like mood disorders. Imagine depression was described purely from the outside view

I always felt like many autism criteria mirror how I am perceived vs how I feel. Idk how to describe but when my face is showing barely any emotion I often wish to be more emotive in my muscles in the face but I just have a poker face and can't change it much. Others perceive it as emotionless but I feel a vast amount of emotions, they just don't show up well. That's just one example of many.

I think about this all the time. Who better to structure the criteria than the criteria themselves haha.

there also needs to be criteria for neuronormies because they're just the assumed standard with no scientific evidence that they are "right"...

I don't know the DSM5 so I'm curious - is any of it written FOR the neurodivergent described within?
