the dirt from digging the moat for the castle became Holiday Hill. to build a building in that spot requires a flat surface with a proper foundation. The Matterhorn was built in the Spot that the mound of dirt once occupied

My favorite unpopular Disneyland opinion is they should tear Matterhorn down to the basketball court, and get rid of Nemo then rebuild Expedition Matterhorn with new modern tracks/cars/animatronics.
