@wolfethegm: composition choices matter. if the players choose a bad party composition, you should not save them from that. you can warn them against it, But ultimately it is their choice. #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #DnD5e #TabletopRPG #RPGCommunity #DiceRoll #CriticalHit #DNDLife #DungeonMaster #RolePlayingGames #DnDMemes #TTRPG #DnDAdventure #RollForInitiative #CriticalRole #FantasyRPG #DnDParty #EpicLoot #MiniaturesPainting #Nat20

God forbid we allow our friends to be creative and enjoy a game how they want

have you considered the problem isn't with the party comp but with your campaigns?

I think if players are not making characters that fit the theme of your game that’s a bad thing.

Not forcing one of your players into feeling pigeonholed into choosing a healer or tank is not "coddling" them 🥀

Honestly I do the same. Unless players are really new to the game I don't hold their hand at all. If the whole party are wizards it's going to be their problem if they constantly get downed in close combat.

100% the world is how it is. how you go about exploring it is the adventure. 😁

yes and no. I believe this should be discussed at session 0 if they are uncomfortable with extreme consequences then you can adjust certain availability items like healing potions. but if they have been informed of the consequences then, we ball

Love this, just did a heist one shot, told all of them it was a heist one shot…. Not a single rouge or investigative character to be made 😂

If they don't have healer they need to spend on potions.

the key here is communication. but yeah, you're completely right. it actually *validates* the choices the players make tbh, because they can do feel weighty and important

I kinda thought this was common sense stuff for the game. if you play a goblin in a world where goblins massacre people. obv not gonna go well lol

I love having to worry about composition because in such case, everyone has tbeir role, their time to shine and all characters are crucial

yes, let's gatekeep people in their 30s with what little free time they have to regularly coordinate with others to dictate how they can spend that time

joined a campaign in the middle once after the guy playing a rogue dropped out, enemy was expecting a barbarian, a rogue and a bard so went for close combat, they were not at all prepared for a draconic sorcerer 🤣

My party did an “oops all martial” party build, going in knowing someone was probably not gonna make it. As long as your players understand that then there are no issues.

At the end of the day, it's about having fun. If your players want to be a party of all fighters, there are a million ways to accommodate for that while still running a campaign that offers challenges.

this shouldn't be controversial, the fun of rpgs is that your decisions matter, so a good or bad composition should have meaningful effects, that's the point of the hobby

I always look at what my party is good at and what they struggle with. I build encounters for both; some make them feel strong, others are challenges

I thought this was common sense but apparently not by the comments. Our group always tries to avoid doubling up on niches and filling skill gaps. Lets everyone have their moment to shine and still play what we want

currently playing a ranger in a game with a barbarian, a rogue, a sorcerer, a warlock, and a wizard. The only healing we have access to is a few casts of 1st level cure wounds from me

I was like “nah” up until he said “put those items in your world so they can seek them out.” I feel like people constantly run & play D&D like a MOBA instead of a storytelling game. Very into this series so far!

this is a lovely take. we always say that DMs should let the players have fun with their choices by allowing them to use the gimmick builds they come up with. this is the same but the other way around!

If my players don’t have a healer, I add an NPC healer. If they don’t have a tank, they get an NPC tank. The point for us is to have fun
