@unoriginal_sins: Why Hollywood is losing to YouTube- and it’s not about content 🫣 MrBeast gets it. Warner Bros. gets it. So why does Hollywood as an industry seem to undervalue the power of infrastructure? #youtubestrategy #netflix #streamingwars #MrBeast #entertainmentindustry #mediastrategy #filmtok #dataanalytics
The main takeaway is - have your own business model. I don’t believe premium is dead. Instead it’s traditional business model is

Yep it has even absorbed podcasts now too. The only way to be discovered is to have a clip go viral, or have your show recommended by YouTube.

Imho it’s because infrastructure requires patience and thoughtful analysis, and the majority of how Hollywood functions is through almost childlike tantrums and giant egos that do not have the capacity for the former.

Hollywood can’t compete with YouTube or social media because they play by diffferent rules. Hollywood has unions, worker protections, copyright laws they have to follow, and other expensive professional things they have to do. YT/Social doesn’t follow any rules and gives away content for free and rapidly. Two different industries completely.

Im very much not a fan of Zaslav, but he seems to be the only person that realizes that if you keep all your IP in one spot (in his case HBO Max) then not everybody is going to see what you have to offer and check it out. You need to give them a taste at other locations (YT and Netflix, etc)

Capitalism is exhausting. We can’t just have a video sharing site.

When you say infrastructure it makes me think of the crumbling movie theaters in small towns across America that symbolize how people see Hollywood from the outside

This is a great commentary, very fascinating conversation. I love the concept that the road is being repaved. I mean I think you could say we saw rumblings of that shift when Netflix gained so many subscribers during a time when the hollywood giants laughed at an online platform. Now it’s the same lesson again, but with a new spin, even more separated from the classic hollywood movie theater that production companies still cling to

I love how well put this is, it really suggests how much the algorithm has changed and adapting to it is the only way to stay relevant. Time and season does have its effect on everything

That was a great interview on the Town. People love free options like YouTube and Tubi. Turns out watching commercials isn’t so bad when it saves you $15/month

Tubi is the streaming version of the Criterion Collection, the VAST amount of movies and shows is INSANE

now we need to figure out how to replicate that infrastructure as a publicly owned service instead of a privately owned utility

YT is clearly a streamer, YT is not competing with AWS, Hollywood IS infrastructure, Mr.Beast has said many times now story is king and he signed for 2 more seasons on Prime

Read an article in Van Fair years ago talking about how the beg of the end of Hollywood was happening— Hollywood was competing with YouTube (and now TT and others) for our time and attention. That’s always what it was about.

How popular was mr beasts Amazon show? Was it as big as his YT numbers? I’ve been curious as to whether he can switch platforms and bring an audience. Like iamsupergirl (? The Indian creator forget it that’s her name) kinda flopped after leaving yt despite being pretty big

YouTube is a part of Google Alphabet so they’re not worried about shareholder pressure and expansion and have totally different goals then Netflix and other social platforms

I think the bigger issue that no one seems to bring up is the quality. Hollywood has gotten worse since they started to appeal to lowest common denominator of consumers. YouTube literally is the lowest common denominator. I don’t know why everyone keeps ignoring this. This is a bad trend!
