@metmuseum: “It has affirmed my firm belief in the power of gathering. It’s also shown me how healing and cathartic it can be to write as a practice, even if you don’t call yourself a writer…"–OlaRonke Akinmowo During her Civic Practice Partnership residency at The Met, OlaRonke Akinmowo—founder of @thefreeblackwomenslibrary—created Obsidian, a writers collective inspired by a photo of “The Sisterhood,” a 1970s writing group whose members included icons like Toni Morrison, Ntozake Shange, and Alice Walker. Obsidian met for over a year to write, workshop, and build community—and their time together led to the publication of Pretty Little Brick, a book featuring work from each member. The Met’s Civic Practice Partnership connects socially engaged artists with communities across NYC to create bold, collaborative projects that foster dialogue, creativity, and care—both in neighborhoods across NYC and at the Museum.
