“Nottoway Plantation in White Castle, Louisiana, WAS one of the largest remaining antebellum mansions in the South. Built in 1859 by John Hampden Randolph, it was sustained by the forced labor of enslaved African Americans. In 1860, Randolph enslaved 155 people to operate his massive sugarcane plantation. By the time of emancipation, that number had grown to 176, and the estate spanned over 7,000 acres. The plantation’s wealth and grandeur came at the expense of countless Black lives—men, women, and children who endured brutal conditions in the fields and were denied their basic humanity. Sugarcane was one of the harshest crops to cultivate, and the labor was grueling and dangerous. Today, Nottoway is marketed as a resort and historic site. While its tours mention slavery, many argue the narrative still romanticizes the antebellum era instead of fully acknowledging the suffering that built it. The legacy of these enslaved people deserves to be remembered with honesty and dignity—not buried beneath Southern nostalgia.”
