@mksnappy: @disposablexhero the problem is you really can see ships at this distance but their math, says that's a lie. an atmosphere conditions and refraction doesn't bring a clear image around to be called a mirage 40 miles away! Not saying its flat bud. But it's not 8 inches per mile squared.

Not sure where the squared part came from but the eight inches per mile is correct . So at 42 miles the ship would be about 28 feet lower in appearance. If it is a big ship you will still see the top of it.
