Jacob was renamed Israel by the Lord, that name has the meaning of "one who wrestles with the Lord (G-d)".

Catholic here. The pastor is not «closer to God» than anyone else. Not even the Pope. They’re educated on tradition and scripture. In Catholicism we argue tradition and scripture too - we just have a hierarchy to give definitive interpretation on crucial/important subjects so no one make grave errors that could result in hell.

I'm already thinking of how high one must be lifting away from the floor to be considered jumping and whether the hight can be attained from a bottom step as the landing is lower than the starting point. 😂

Catholic here that just wanted to point out that Christians are *supposed* to have a very similar system in the Eccumenical Councils, but a lot of history has caused many people to forget that.
Your comments on "that is where Satan lives" is exactly correct, from my perspective.

It feels like so many people’s complaints about Judaism come down to them not understanding that Jewish concepts come more from a place of debate, interpretation and mysticism than the other Abrahamic faiths.

Orthodox Christian here. There is a reason why we have councils, it's in order to follow and believe the correct doctrine that is in the scriptures. Just as the council of Nivea rejected Arianism, the bishops came together in order to talk about the correct nature of Christ, in Orthodoxy. We do not have a head bishop that dictates everything, but we have a synod, led by the Spirit of God, that we should follow the teachings and praxis of. So we do have councils to tell us how to jump in your case.

As someone who grew up orthodox Jewish, I agree with everything he’s saying except that Orthodox Jews do tend to worship their rabbis in a sense. While Gemara is all about interpreting scripture, and there are many different interpretations, people typically listen to the interpretation of their rabbi without question.

One of my favorite things about our religion is that as long as you can present a reasonable case, within the law, there are many valid ways to follow the rules.

this is probably the funniest way of doing Religion, but it's also pretty rational, and this has influenced the Islamic method of Scholarship because so has the Christian method so you get something that's kinda both and it's weird

Similar question to one you replied to: what do y’all believe about the prophecies in the past? Why do y’all think God would speak through them in the past but not now? What shifted?

I'm very curious if I was Jewish at a past life, because I annoy my family so much with my talk of religion and why things need to be the way they are, in general, this one doesn't just apply to religion. Go Judaism! Question everything!

I've always been taught as a Christian that God will talk to anyone willing to listen, and actively guides us, which leads to him taking an active hand in appointing people in positions of authority in the church.

Correct me if I’m wrong but Rabbi is more closely translated as teacher than priest. So for any Catholics out there you can make the comparison of a canon lawyer with expanded responsibilities. PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong.

My dad often pointed to the Jewish faith whenever I talked about feeling guilty questioning things or was frustrated with a lack of openness to debate among other Christians.

Christianity is way too divided, a catholic framework and evangelical viewpoint are almost opposite at this point. I was raised Catholic and we very much debated with our priest and with our community of practice, evangelicals are more prone to jump and not question the pastor.
