That’s what the anime Mahouka is all about. The old magic in the show is exactly as the post described too, old and convoluted. The main protagonist is a magic engineer.

Blood over Brighthaven is a book that has a very interesting magic system. It's probably the one system I've come across that actually comes close to programming.

you create a spell and if it works the first time around, you'll get suspicious.

maybe it's just the
scent or texture of the potato
you don't get power from the potato itself
but it makes you think or feel the right texture to get your thoughts in the right place to cast
something you can't recreate yourself or with a substitute

in this concept, using AI to write a code its the equivalent of making a deal with a supernatural creature
the potato thing immediately made me think of tf2 and the coconut png

I absolutely hate predictable DnDesque magic systems. If the same input produces the same output and you dedicate time to research it, it's not magic, it's SCIENCE.
True magic is like in Mage: The Ascension, i.e. vibes-based input produces unpredictable output.

That idea of magic was implemented years ago in anime Mahouka koukou no rettousei. Sadly enough without many spaghetthi code mages.

a mage is really good at teleportation magic so instead of writing a new spell for fireball, all they do is use the teleportation spell to teleport the nearest fire to where he wants 🤣

This is similar to the book “Blood over Brighthaven” where the magic system felt like coding
