maybe it's just the scent or texture of the potato you don't get power from the potato itself but it makes you think or feel the right texture to get your thoughts in the right place to cast something you can't recreate yourself or with a substitute

I absolutely hate predictable DnDesque magic systems. If the same input produces the same output and you dedicate time to research it, it's not magic, it's SCIENCE. True magic is like in Mage: The Ascension, i.e. vibes-based input produces unpredictable output.
