Verso is already dead, his soul is trapped and Maelle can’t cope with it. NOBODY EXISTS IN THE PAINTINGS except for the Dessandre family, not even Verso. Going with Verso’s ending finally sets him free so his soul can rest at last. Maelle’s ending only further traps him in her safe haven but his eternal hell. He knows what will happen if she stays in the painting, he knows how it will kill his sister HE SACRIFICED HIS LIFE FOR. If she stays, his death will be in vain.

People who try to simplify the endings to justify their own choice do the game a disservice. by choosing Verso you still destroyed an entire world and stole so many people's futures. that's on YOU (and me, I flip flopped between endings but ended up going with Verso because the cutscene made it seem like the canon ending) and if you chose Maelle, you are forcing Verso to live a life he never wanted just because Maelle is too scared to face reality. you're torturing not just him but a fragment of original Versos soul and/or maybe puppeteering the entirety of lumiere. that's on YOU.

I picked Verso’s ending because while I believe everyone in the canvas is real and sentient, ultimately the canvas will be destroyed. Alicia is dying while in it, and Renoir will come back and destroy it. Keeping the canvas is just prolonging suffering imo

I sides with Maelle mainly because her side is the one I’ve already put in 35 hours of gameplay to defend. I can’t just go back now and side with the guy we’ve been trying to stop this whole time

Jesus these comments reek of "i dont understand nuance." There isnt a good or bad ending. To the people calling Maelle selfish because she wants to live in a world she can actually live, then Verso is also selfish for wanting to die. neither is truly selfish or delusional. both have their own beliefs and desires. can we stop painting one side as good and the other bad?

She has the ability to repaint them on a new canvas. People claiming it was for the citizens totally ignore that isn't her reason she even tells him to stop begging her to let him rest. She expressly states she does this purley put of wanting to live a life with him. She not only threw away her real brothers sacrifice but also keeps his soul in eternal torment and a fake immortal copy to rp her dead brother. Plus her mother WILL find the canvas again causing another fracture and the death of her whole family due to them fighting a war alone.

Verso's is far better, albeit still very sad. The family gets to move on and begin to truly mourn and heal. And Verso, and the fragment of Verso's soul, gets to finally rest. Instead of being forced to live a life he didn't want that will eventually claim his sister. And possibly mother, should she return in more grief. I have a lot of feelings on this game lol

I'll say this, when I had to pick I didn't think of the outcome, I only thought " ah you let Gustave die, I've been waiting to put you down" then I saw the ending and it felt wrong, I'm now doing a new run, and I'll see if verso ending is a bit better
