“AKC-registered” does not mean what so many dog owners think it does. 👀 It only means a dog’s parents were also registered with the AKC — not that the breeder is reputable, ethical, or even doing health testing. And guess what? Some of the worst puppy mills in the U.S. are still AKC-registered. The AKC doesn’t inspect breeding facilities unless the breeder volunteers OR registers more than 4 litters per year and even then those inspections are random and not for every breeder. These inspections cover basic welfare but also do not evaluate the in depth quality of a breeding program. There are zero health or welfare requirements to register a litter.
