If you can find a small gym I’d go that route. The community vibe is so essential when you find the gym intimidating. Being able to have a chat with others helps me and lets me ask for advice if needed.

Gyms are a tough hang at the best of times. If you want a similar lifting workout that is much more of a fun and welcoming, motivating class vibe, you should give Session in Greenpoint/Williamsburg a try. The trainers are lovely, super knowledgeable and also offer PT outside of the classes. 💕

Gyms are designed to make women feel intimidated. I’ve been an athletic trainer for 9 years and even I get intimidated. I recommend group fitness that focuses on strength and conditioning (NOT BARRY’s), where there’s a community that supports each other

If we lived closer, I’d say come to the gym with me! I’d happily be your gym buddy! This used to be me and I promise you it gets so much less intimidating as time goes on. People are genuinely not even paying attention to you and more on their own workout.

As someone who has trauma at the gym from men, I have found a few things to be helpful: go during weird times if possible like 10/11am weekdays, 8pm sundays etc. go to gyms that primarily have an lgbtq or women members, always start with the areas/machines you know your most comfy with, also some gyms offer group classes for weightlifting or machine work that could be great!

My love! I’m so sorry that happened. I’ve been going to my gym for over a year now and I felt the same way when I started! I found going early (I get there at 6am) helped because there’s really only older folks and it’s quiet. I go to 92NY and really like it ♥️

Omg I’m so sorry, that’s so awful. If it helps I also get insecure and I usually try and find a corner that I can do a matted workout in! It helps you feel a little bit more protected!

I used to go to an all women gym and everyone just went and minded their own business. It was so comfortable. The workout classes were fun and more socializing took place but the regular gym area was so nice. It really made a difference for my motivation to go.

So relatable but also it could be the gym itself. You might need to find the gym thays right for you. I also find writing my work outs down like a list best. Lastly, everyone is in their own heads at the gym remember that! you look great and getting there is the hard part… also fuck that guy that did that to you!!!

I’m sorry this happened to you! I used to feel the same way so I temporarily hired a trainer at the gym (not private gym, regular gym). This really helped me get over my fear!!!

pro tip: go to the less “bougie” gyms , skip the equinoxes. those people are there for aesthetics only and it’s so superficial. find a smaller gym if you can and you’ll find a much more welcoming vibe 💛

That’s so violating, I’m so sorry that happened to you. You should be so proud of yourself that you’re pushing past that awful experience and reclaiming the gym for yourself, even if it’s hard!

Im also intimidated! I go to a local gym that offers group workout/lifting classes & its been amazing, smaller groups and the trainers help correct form. Maybe you can find something like that? 🤞🏼

I HATED going to the gym when I first started going without my trainer. Now, my biggest piece of advice is take up space. Make it yours, bop out and just zone out

Not sure what type of gym it is cause that can play a big factor but I’ve been going to the gym for years and a new gym can always feel so frightening. My best suggestion is go in small increments- start by planning to go stretching for 20 mins and leave, then maybe book a class or two to get used to the vibe in the gym and the feel more comfortable in those walls

Honestly I had something similar happen to me in college and I’ve been scared if going to a real gym for like 10+ years now, but now that I’m 30 I’m trying to get myself back in there! We can both do it!
