I played a wizard at level 1 and somehow he was the last one standing in a 1v3 and still won. I even decided to waste one of my turns trying to stabilize my party member but failed and he died the next round.

I made the mistake of starting my players at lvl 1 because the campaign said to, I had them level up at the end of each of the first three seasons because I was having to pull punches so hard 😭

We have an interesting house rule. Characters start with 3 HD worth of hit points at level 1. Makes for smoother campaign starts. Making new characters is fun but really a waste of time when you already have a character concept you want to play

Once our party of 5 was almost completely downed by the first encounter of the campaign. Two CR-reduced gnolls who just happened to roll really good.

I started an all new player game at lvl 1 and I gave them some extra magic items, got to reroll 1/2s on their stats. Now they are overpowered and I have to beef up my monsters

started a campaign a few months ago at lvl 1, our first fight was in a barn with a couple of bansirs and i singled out one and we kept missing each other for four straight rounds😭, it got so bad i had to tell everyone else to let me have this in character

yeah I learned this and was frustrated that my character couldn't be what I wrote them as in combat. so now as a Gm I cut enemy stats as needed until my players characters get their legs( with their consent of course).

That’s why our sessions always start at level 3, it feels a bit weird but it makes it easier when it comes to combat!

very much in the same vein is DCC. Every player starts with 3-5 level 0 peasants and you run an adventure where those are whittled down to your level 1 party of 4-6 pcs.

Level 1 to 8 are the best for excitement and risk in my opinion. Not that higher level can't be exciting, but lower levels certainly have a different feel. 👍

Accidentally killed 4 out of 6 party members with a level 2 human barbarian with the great weapon fighter feat. I don't know how but they couldn't hit a 15 ac with advantage. lessons were learned on all sides that day.
