@thinkingpowers: The tragedy of the commons and the price of unchecked freedom What do overfishing, air pollution, and the messy office fridge have in common? They're all examples of the "Tragedy of the Commons," a powerful idea that explains how the pursuit of self-interest can deplete and degrade shared resources, harming everyone in the long run. This video explains a key concept that underlies many environmental, social, and economic issues and how rules and regulations can offer a path towards greater freedom and prosperity. #TragedyOfTheCommons #Overfishing #AirPollution #EnvironmentalIssues #Environment #Sustainability #Pollution #ClimateChange #Freedom #Education #Short #Shorts #FYP #FYPage #Lawn #Lawns #Traffic #Deforestation #WaterPollution #NutrientPollution #Fertilizer The Tragedy of the Commons by Garrett Hardin (1968): https://math.uchicago.edu/~shmuel/Modeling/Hardin,%20Tragedy%20of%20the%20Commons.pdf

Maybe the greatest US societal ill is a disregard for common goods. I think more to things linke the postal system, sewers, public water systems

Sadly, this actually explains what the GOP has done by deregulation each time they have been in control of congress since Nixon was elected.

It will be hard for people like Elon and Trump to follow. And yet, commoners want Elon and Trump in charge

Think about this.... EVERY shampoo, conditioner, gasoline additives, floor cleaner, pesticide, fertilizer etc produced... ends up in the environment. Billions of humans, all adding their "little bit" at a time.

Common misconception of fertilizer on lawns. If applied properly it doesn’t really move in the soil. Of course applying it properly is sometimes a tall order

I love the way you explained the tragedy of the commons. It is a great way to make a case for reasonable regulations.

The tragedy of The Tragedy of the Commons is Harden failedcto recognize actual sustainable collective management of shared resources because he could not see beyond his conviction that people are basically only out for themselves - which is abundantly evident is not entirely true. And this produced Neo-liberalism which purports to solve the problem by privatizing the commons. In reality, Harden's essay was just the excuse for plunder.

My parents live on a lake. I watched the fertilizer one happen in real time (the neighborhood also has a golf course 🙄 ), as well as the results of people feeding the Canadian geese (they now oil eggs to kill them every spring, and encourage people to chase the geese off). We need regulations.
