Weakened and to protect his last eye, he entrusts it to Itachi, asking him to use his power to protect Konoha. He then commits suicide by throwing himself into the Naka River to make it look like an accidental death and prevent his body from being recovered by the Uchiha. His death had a profound impact on Itachi and influenced his future choices, especially his role in uniting the clan.
