The girl worth fighting for was the little girl who lost her doll, and nobody will ever convince me there was ever meant to be any other interpretation of that transition.

Putting his father's helmet on the pole, the familiar doll lying in the mud and the unspoken horror of what happened to the happy children bickering over it... it was shocking

I have never once thought of Mulan as a musical. It’s a Disney movie that has a song or two in it, but I’ve never thought of it as a musical. It’s an animated, historical fic.

the Huns actually DO make jokes. they're just so horrifying that we don't recognize it: "How many men does it take to deliver a message?"/"One."

It gives the soldiers a real reason to fight, a purpose to get through the war. Think of your imaginary, perfect girlfriend might get you through a grueling march, but a fantasy can't survive the horrors if war. A real person, though? A little girl that needs to be protected and kept safe? THAT is a reason to fight for, a reason to DIE for if need be.
