So what your saying is you should get started no matter where your starting from because a real lab isn’t stagnant it’s constantly growing and improving as you do and your needs that you develop

but wouldn't an old laptop for example struggle to run a Minecraft server if it's modded for example + isn't there an electricity cost to factor in for charging the laptop or keeping it plugged in?

Pro tip!!! Go to thrift stores and look for switches and older PCs! I found a dell xps 8900 with an i7 and 64 gigs of ram for 30 bucks. I also got a 5 port netgear switch for networking. I put proxmox on the dell xps and gonna eventually cluster it with a dell optiplex 7050 micro i found at thrift for 7 bucks! THRIFT STORES ARE A W CHAT

getting into homelabbing is technical in the best hyper-fixation kind of way. there's always more services, more stuff to learn, but you can also keep it simple.

I don’t get how you won’t have to pay for services like Netflix. Can you explain that?

my current proxmox host is my old gaming computer. the only recommendation I can make is a sas or raid controller to make life a little easier. self hosted is a fun experience

Ok but why would deidacted server requiremnts want higher ghz from the cpu? (in some games) (like i won't find a cheap 3.4ghz or the ability to have 32gbs on a laptop)
Especially in Sweden, when i was able to buy a deidacted pc with new components CHEAPER (i did haggle) than most pcs on facebook/other 2nd hand places

Love that you’re spreading the word about homelabs! One aspect about older hardware that I think is worth considering is electricity cost. A “free” old server that pulls 200w from the wall will cost more in electricity in a few years vs a newer pc (8th gen or newer mini office pc) for say $100 but sips on a few watts from the wall!
